Improving Nutrient Absorption

  • Keep alcohol and supplements separate - alcohol will leach these supplements
  • Avoid drinking tea and coffee at meal times or within one hour either side of taking your supplement - these beverages have a leaching effect on nutrients
  • Do not smoke for at least 30 minutes either side of a meal or taking supplements - the chemicals in tobacco smoke have a leaching effect on nutrients and use up antioxidants in the process.
  • Eat slowly -- stressful activities can impair digestion and prevent absorption
  • Fat soluble vitamins are best taken with meals that contains some fat
  • Foods high in B-complex vitamins (such as cereals) and vitamin B-complex supplements are best taken early in the day, since they kick-start the metabolism
  • Never take supplements, especially those containing minerals, on an empty stomach; they may bring on nausea.
  • Eat adequate levels of a good variety of fiber, and some live yogurt to keep the intestines healthy and therefore enhance absorption rates.
